What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
I have been thinking what discovery means. I think it means that you are going to find out what something is. I think it means that you are a learned person. Discovery means to me that you are going to find out something new. It means that you are a discoverer. In my picture I am discovering all kinds of different plant and the roots of the plants. I think discovery is that you are discovering new things every time. I think discover or discovery as a group we are going to find something that is amazing that we have never seen.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

I played Jump Cat to research how a professional arcade game is made. It is made by Scott Griffiths. You move the cat by using the mouse. The cat follows the direction your finger takes on the mouse pad. The cat jumps over rocks, trees, and bushes in its way. The cat jumps by using the left click on the mouse. The object of the game is to jump over any obstacle in its way. You keep playing to beat your score or your friend’s score. The rules of the game are displayed under the play window. I would give it the rating of 3 in a 1-4 star rating.

The materials to make the game are cardboard, rocks, trees, bushes, a mini toy cat, tape, and the markers to color the rocks, the cat, and other stuff. The game costs about $19.99 to build and to buy it would cost $30.00.

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
Damian and I have decided to call our arcade game Target Mix. The game is a mix of two games: Basketball and Ball in a Truck. For the Ball in a Truck you roll a ball down a rail and try to get it into a truck or hit the truck. However, if you get it into the truck you get more points. For the basketball game, you shoot a bouncy ball into different cups. The smaller the cups, the more points you get. The rules of the game will be displayed on a sheet of paper on the front of the box for both games. The level of difficulty for both games combined is a 2.7 out of a 4 star rating. You win the game by either getting the ball in a truck or getting a ball in a hoop. If you do win the game, tickets will come out of the ticket slot.

Our blueprint shows on the front of the box where the title of the game is displayed. It is in cut out block letters. For decoration, the box has a little target. It also has a ticket slot and a hole for the ball to roll in. From the top of the box you see the inside of the game, where there are 4 toy trucks for the Ball in a Truck, and hoops for the Basketball game. On the side of the box, the only thing there is our company name, Nicholas and Damian Co.

Our materials to build the game are bouncy balls, toy trucks, different size cups for the basketball, a box, some cardboard, a ruler for the rail, marbles, and tape to tape everything together. It would probably not take that long to build the game, so I believe that it would probably take about 3-6 days in the Discovery Center. One of the problems we foresee for the game design is that the trucks may not have holes in them, so we might have to substitute the trucks with something else.

Try It Out

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?

Examiner: Ms. Waters

Date: 1/28/13

Praise: Love that it’s two-in-one, willing to risk life and limb in the name in the game, very creative.

Question: Is there a time limit?

Polish: Think about writing regulations on the game so people know what to expect. It may make the game easier to understand.

Examiner: Mrs. Koska

Date: 2/1/13

Praise: Like the marble and throwing from far away. Fun game.

Question: Why did you decide to make two games in one box? Cooler game, 2 games in one.

Polish: I would let one person play the game at a time. Would not want to get hit by marbles.

Student Comment: Thank you for playing Target Mix, my game. I am happy that you liked it. You have to throw from 4 feet away or else people can cheat and win a lot of times. Nicholas and I decided to make 2 games in one box because we thought that more people would come to our game and that it would be cooler. More people do come to our game. Thank you for the comment but we do actually just let one person play at a time because it would be safer.

Examiner: Mrs. Rottinghaus

Date: 2/4/13

Praise: Very fun! Great imaginations + fun games.

Question: Why have points and tickets?

Polish: Should the person in the box wear safety gear?

Student Comment: Thank you very much for playing our game. I am happy that you liked it. We have points and tickets because Nicholas and Ithink that it makes it more interesting and more fun because you actually get to win stuff and you feel proud of what you won and yourself. No, you do not have to wear safety gear, but if you want to, you can. Nicholas is the person in the box, not me, so it is up to him.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

To improve Jordyn’s and my game we could put more time into our game and paint it.

Specifically, how would we do this?

Jordyn or I could go get paints at a Five Below or at the Dollar Tree.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned to make an orthographic design.

What do you know now that you did not know before doing the Project?

I learned that I didn’t know before that a kid in California made a cardboard arcade.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

Now I can make a cardboard arcade game and I could not do that before without Mr. May.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I like that we used a sombrero as a catcher when you got the ball through the mouth.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could of brainstormed more about the game before we started.

A Final Reflection:

Jordyn and I made the game, Flick the Ball. To make our arcade game better we could put more time into our game or we could paint over where we drew with makers. We would do this by getting paints at Five Below or at the Dollar Tree. With making the game I learned a lot of things. I learned how to do an orthographic design. I also learned that a kid in California made a whole arcade out of cardboard. Now I know how to make a cardboard game!
